I think the background is perfect and shows off her face and those big brown eyes, it's often better to keep the background simple so that the main focus is on the subject.
Simplicity is the name of the game. Came out great. I am in process of doing a prety detaileed painting and know I am heading for trouble if I don't watch it with all the detail I am using. Will be a challenge to pull it off. I Like how your dog painting is coming.
I changed the background and am much happier with it now, there was just far too much going on before.
